The invention is a method for efficiently producing an aromatic compound by an intramolecular cyclization reaction, the aromatic compound having a ring structure that includes a nitrogen atom or oxygen atom. An aromatic compound composed of tert-butyl-2-(3-oxo-3-phenylpropyl)phenyl carbamate or another aniline derivative or the like, or an aromatic compound composed of 3-(1-hydroxynaphthalene-2-yl)propionic acid or another naphthol derivative or the like is made to react in a system to which an oxidizing agent and a quaternary ammonium salt represented by general formula (1) are fed. In the formula, X is an iodine atom; and R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each independently a C1-30 hydrocarbon group in which some hydrogen atoms are optionally substituted with halogen atoms, or R1 and R2 may be combine to form a divalent organic group bonded to a nitrogen atom, and R3 and R4 may combine to form a divalent organic group bonded to a nitrogen atom. |

1. A method for producing a compound represented by the formula (22): comprising reacting a compound represented by formula (21) with a quaternary ammonium salt represented by formula (1):and an oxidizing agent,wherein
X is an iodine atom; R1, R2, R3 and R4 are independently a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms in which some hydrogen atoms are optionally replaced with a halogen atom, provided that R1 and R2 are optionally bonded to each other to form a divalent organic group that is bonded to the nitrogen atom, wherein R3 and R4 are optionally bonded to each other to form a divalent organic group that is bonded to the nitrogen atom; R11 is a hydrogen atom, a tert-butoxycarbonyl group, a benzyloxycarbonyl group, a 2,2,2-trichloroethoxycarbonyl group, or a methanesulfonyl group; R21, R22, R23 and R24 are independently a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkoxy group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or a linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms in which some hydrogen atoms are optionally replaced with a halogen atom, wherein one, two or all of the combinations of R21 and R22, R22 and R23, and R23 and R24 are optionally bonded to each other to form a divalent organic group; R25 and R26 are independently a hydrogen atom or a linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms in which some hydrogen atoms are optionally replaced with a halogen atom; R27 is a hydrogen atom or a linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms in which some hydrogen atoms are optionally replaced with a halogen atom; R28 is a heteroaryl group having 3 to 20 carbon atoms or a linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms in which some hydrogen atoms are optionally replaced with a halogen atom; and m is 1 or 2. |
