An air cushion vehicle has a keel including an elongated, bulbous flexible container arranged to be inflated, by air or other gas under pressure and provided with vents for the escape of gas and of any water that may find its way into the container. The vehicle comprises a base structure 1, lift fans B supplying air through ducts 2 to nozzles D and a longitudinal keel F and stabilizing keels (not shown) partitioning the halves of the cushion space between the nozzles D and heel F. The keel F is based, for shape, on an isosceles triangle XYZ and comprises bulbous walls 3 and 5, connected by transverse diaphragms 4 and 6, the lower part of the keel being formed by a bulbous section 7 formed with a blade member 8. Along its length the keel is made in overlapping sections and at the rear end it blends into a two-section bulbous end wall formed with apertures for the discharge of air and water. Air is supplied to the interior of the keel from a pump 9 to inflate it to the profile shown. In an alternative embodiment, a stability wall is of elliptical cross-section, the profile being retained by transverse webs when the wall is inflated.</p> |
