PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoder capable of stably detecting the origin even when the origin detection is performed at a high speed, and provide an origin calculation method of the encoder capable of accurately calculating the origin.SOLUTION: The encoder includes: position signal generating means 111 for generating an orthogonal signal in response to the displacement of the position or angle of a movable body; incremental signal generating means for generating an incremental signal of the position or angle from the orthogonal signal; origin detecting means 112 for generating an origin signal when the movable body exists at a predetermined position; and means for generating an overspeed signal when the speed during the detection of the origin signal exceeds a threshold.
