Provided are a method for producing a phenolic resin that makes it possible to produce an epoxy resin having a benzoxanthene structure easily and at good yield by a safe process, a phenolic resin, an epoxy resin, and an epoxy resin composition containing these. Dihydroxynaphthalenes and ketones are reacted in the presence of an organic acid catalyst, and a phenolic resin represented by formula (1) is produced. (In the formula, R1 and R2 represent hydrogen atoms or the like, and k represents an integer of 1-4.)
