FIELD: physics, computer engineering.SUBSTANCE: invention relates to translation (conversion or transfer) of addresses in a computing environment. Disclosed is conversion of an address contained in a request issued by an adapter into an address which is directly applicable when accessing system memory. The address comprises a plurality of bits, which includes a first portion of bits and a second portion of bits. The second portion of bits is used to index into one or more levels of address translation tables to perform the conversion, while the first portion of bits is ignored for the conversion.
