A method for operating a tape storage system, readback signals are simultaneously received from a set of data readers DR1 reading from data tracks DT1, DT2DT8, DT9 of a set of adjacent data tracks extending along a longitudinal extension (x) of a tape storage medium. Each data track DT1, DT2DT8, DT9 of the set has a width wDT and each data reader DR1, DRi, DR9 of the set has a width wDR equal to or less than the width wDT of a data track DT1, DT2DT8, DT9. Simultaneously to receiving the readback signals from the set of data readers DR1, DRi, DR9 readback signals are received from a servo reader arrangement SRA1, SRA2 containing at least one servo reader SR1, SR2, SR3, SR4 arranged laterally offset from one of the data readers DR1, DR9 by less than the width wDT of a data track DT1, DT2DT8, DT9. At least one of lateral position, velocity, gain and timing information is determined dependent on the readback signals of each servo reader SR1, SR2 in the servo reader arrangement SRA1. |
