Device, System and Method of Landmark-Based and Personal Contact-Based Route Guidance

A mapping system is disclosed that provides route guidance in the form of a map and verbal or textual directions which includes reference to both landmarks and personal contacts. Landmarks and contacts can be rated for suitability in providing route guidance. Depending on the rating, guidance using landmarks or personal contacts can be preferentially used in place of or to supplement guidance based on the underlying road network.

1. A mapping system implemented on a computer processor and configured to provide route guidance from an origin to a destination, comprising:
a database implemented on a computer storage device containing:
landmark information including for each landmark:
a text description;a location; anda route guidance rating;personal contacts information including for each personal contact:
a text description;a location; anda route guidance rating; anda road-based routing information including each road segment:
a text description of road segment and attribution; anda location of road segment; and a route guidance generator which is adapted to generate route guidance information along a calculated route based on one or more of the landmark information and the personal contacts information in addition or in place of the road-based routing information and based on the route guidance rating of the at least one of the landmark information and the personal contacts information being greater than a pre-defined rating threshold.
