This composite structure comprises: a steel pipe; a joining member, one end of which is inserted into the steel pipe; and concrete that fills the space between the inner peripheral face of the steel pipe and the one end of the joining member. The steel pipe has a projection that projects radially into the steel pipe from the inner peripheral face of the steel pipe and that extends in a spiral along the pipe axis direction of the steel pipe. The projection extends in a spiral along the pipe axis direction so as to straddle the border between a stiffened region and a hollow pipe region. The extension length in the pipe axis direction of the projection in the hollow pipe region is no less than the local buckling half-wavelength of the steel pipe.
