<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problem: when a traveling cable 5 of an elevator is caught in equipment in a hoistway 11 due to earthquake or strong wind, a cage 1 is left suspended until a lifeguard comes and passengers in the cage 1 are shut in the cage 1 for a long period of time since the caught state of the traveling cable 5 is unknown heretofore. <P>SOLUTION: An elevator apparatus includes: first and second supporting implements 20 and 30 around which the traveling cable 5 is wound; a first detecting device 23 detecting downward displacement of the first supporting implement 20 of a prescribed amount or more; and a second detecting device 33 detecting upward displacement of the second supporting implement 30 of a prescribed amount or more, thereby the caught state of the traveling cable 5 can be distinguished.
