An apparatus and method for playing a game having multiple outcomes and includes blockading game elements or symbols. The game involves forming winning combinations from combinations of symbols in a matrix using only accessible symbol positions. Achieving winning combinations of symbols among accessible symbols results in awards to players. The winning combinations of symbols are then removed from the matrix resulting in a new arrangement of accessible symbol positions. With reference to the drawing, initially only the symbols in reel 1 and reel 5 are accessible. The symbols in reels 2 to 4 become accessible when the symbols forming winning symbol combinations are removed from reels 1 and 5. The apparatus and method are offered on electronic gaming machines such as slot machines and video poker machines, but may also be deployed on other devices such as on a general purpose computing device or a mobile phone in stand-alone form or when connected to a network, such as the internet. A random number which provides the outcome of the game may be provided by a random number generator (RNG) that may be on-board or at a remote secure server. |
