A back rest portion for a reclining office chair. The back rest has a frame with at least two spaced apart, L-shaped side members (41). The side members (41) have a front face (SA) that faces a seated occupant and a flange (SB) extending generally rearwardly from the front face (SA). The flanges (SB) are arranged to resist a majority of the loading applied to the side members of the frame by a seated occupant. The frame further includes at least one support member (45, 49) extending from a lower portion to mount the frame to the main transom, the recline mechanism, or the seat portion of the chair. A compliant back support surface extends between the side members (41).
