METHODS FOR IMPROVING CEREBROSPINAL FLUID FLOW

The disclosure describes a method for improving cerebrospinal fluid flow and improving functions of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier by restoring its capacity to filter toxins into cerebrospinal fluid. In some examples, the method includes accessing a cisterna magna space and withdrawing a volume of cerebrospinal fluid from the cisterna magna space. After withdrawal, the same volume of cerebrospinal fluid is infused back into the cisterna magna space to exert pressure, which is transmitted as kinetic energy to the membrane of the blood-CSF barrier. This re-establishes the membrane with a proper electrochemical potential difference such that normal filtration mechanisms resumes with ongoing CSF production.

1. A method for altering cerebrospinal fluid flow, comprising the steps of:
accessing a cisterna magna space containing cerebrospinal fluid; withdrawing a volume of cerebrospinal fluid from the cisterna magna space; and infusing the volume of cerebrospinal fluid back into the cisterna magna space as a bolus injection at a rate capable of transmitting a boost in kinetic energy to a blood-CSF barrier, wherein the boost in kinetic energy is converted into potential energy and causes a change in an electrochemical potential difference that facilitates transcellular mechanisms across the blood-CSF barrier for improving at least a blood filtration or a CSF production function of the blood-CSF barrier.
