[Also in Division F1] A fluid compressor comprises compressor means in a crankcase 12, a lubricant pump 50 supplying lubricant to the compressor means, and a lubricant sump 24 separate from the crankcase. To start the compressor 10, switch 80 is closed and a solenoid valve 72 in passage 70 opens to allow passage of gas from crankcase 12 into sump 24 to equalise the pressures. Time delay mechanism 84 then closes switch 85 to start the compressor. Oil pump 50 is driven by crank-shaft 20 and draws oil from sump 24 through line 56 with check-valve 58, and supplies it through passage 60 to bearings 42, 43 &c. Oil which accumulates in crankcase 12 is carried into sump 24 via passage 70 by gas leaked from piston 30, the gas then passing via passage 74 with check valve 75 into the piston cylinder 28 of the compressor. To shut down the compressor switch 80 is opened, thus closing valve 72 which, with valves 58 and 75, prevents flow of gas into the sump 24 while the compressor is inoperative.</p> |
