Disclosed are a method for supplying toner to a developing unit and an image forming apparatus using the same. The method for supplying toner to a developing unit is performed by the image forming apparatus, in which a developing unit and a toner bottle for supplying toner to the developing unit are separately mounted, and includes: a step of detecting the amount of remaining toner in the developing unit during a printing process; a step of comparing the detected amount of remaining toner with a first reference value; and a step of continuing the printing process in case the detected amount of remaining toner is greater than the first reference value according to a result of the comparison, and of determining whether to supply the toner to the developing unit based on a preset mode in case the detected amount of remaining toner is smaller than the first reference value. The present invention can significantly reduce the degradation of printing performance caused by entering a toner supply mode, if needed by a user.
