PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent scum from being accumulated in an acid formation tank and in a methane fermentation tank and fermentation from being disturbed caused by adhesion of fat to acid former in the acid formation tank and to methanogen in the methane fermentation tank, and furthermore to increase recovery amount of methane gas.SOLUTION: An anaerobic treatment method is provided which comprises: performing acid fermentation of organic matter using acid former, also decomposing emulsion thereby separating oil and emulsified fat from each other by oil water separation in an acid formation tank 2; recovering the separated fat by a fat recovery means and feeding the acid fermentation liquid into a methane fermentation tank 3; performing saponification treatment of the fat recovered by the fat recovery means thereby decomposing the fat in a saponification treatment tank 4; and feeding the saponification treatment liquid into the methane fermentation tank 3 via the acid formation tank 2. By the method, the recovery amount of the biogas generated in the methane fermentation tank 3 is increased, scum is prevented from being accumulated in the acid formation tank and in the methane fermentation tank and fermentation is prevented from being disturbed caused by adhesion of fat to the acid former in the acid formation tank and to methanogen in the methane fermentation tank.
