[Also in Divisions F4 and H1] A system for the storage and controlled release of a highly volatile fluid comprises a chain of storage containers for said fluid, a collection vessel for receiving the contents of the containers, a driving device for passing the chain of containers through the vessel, and a dispensing device in the vessel for successively releasing the contents of the containers inside the vessel. A subdivided liquid storage tube 14 is passed through a pressure vessel 10 by means of a variable speed friction drive 20 and guided by a roller 15. Inlet and outlet passages 12, 13 for the tube to enter and leave the vessel 10, are each provided with a number of seals 18 which may be O-rings of a fluorocarbon polymer, arranged so that the vessel is maintained gastight as the tube passes through. Inside the vessel 10, a blade 16 ruptures each compartment 17 of the tube after it has entered the vessel, releasing the stored fluid, and wipers 19 remove any remaining liquid before the tube leaves the vessel. A stud 23 provides an outlet for the fluid from the vessel. The vapour pressure within the vessel may be increased by heating using coils 22. The series of containers 14 may be formed by intermittently heat-sealing a previously filled plastics tube, which can then be stored on a reel. The seals 18, wipers 19 and tube 14 may all be made from a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene. The system described is particularly suitable for storing liquid chlorine, and the outlet 23 may lead to the chlorine electrode of a Li/LiC1/ Cl 2 fuel cell (not shown). The rate of supply of chlorine to the cell can thus be controlled by the speed of the drive 20 and by the heating coils 22. |
