Disclosed are a mobile terminal capable of displaying image data of a counterpart person who generates an event, and a method for controlling the same. The mobile terminal according to the present invention comprises: a display unit for displaying information; a wireless communication unit for performing communications with an external server storing first image data and a counterpart terminal; a memory storing second image data; and a control unit which extracts image data related to the counterpart person from at least one among the first image data and the second image data if an event is generated by the counterpart terminal, and controls the extracted image data to be outputted via at least a part of the display unit for notification of the event.
