A clutch for a cooling fan is engaged by compressed air which is admitted to a chamber 13 through an orifice 17 and moves to the left a main-rotary annular piston 14. This motion is transferred through a bearing 18 to a sleeve 19, fast with an input shaft 12, and to a clutch plate 22. A surface 23 of clutch plate 22 compresses a radially split annular friction element 37 between members 33 and 35, thus transmitting the drive through a member 30 to an output shaft, not shown. A spring 24 disengages the clutch. The clutch is operated in response to the temperature of the cooling water in a vehicle radiator, Fig. 2, (not shown), illustrates a modification in which the clutch is engaged by bolts 45 if the compressed air supply fails. |
