A heat conducting wall 4 separates two gas streams passing respectively in counterflow relation through chambers 2, 3, and heat transfer between the gases is aided by having in each chamber a plurality of beds of particulate solid material in contact with the wall 4 and fluidized by the gas. As shown, each chamber has a gas inlet and a gas outlet, and the beds of particulate material are contained in compartments formed in each chamber by gratings 5. To provide the counterflow, chamber 3 is further subdivided by partitions 9 forming subchambers 10 adjacent ones of which are interconnected by conduits 11. The wall 4 may be corrugated (Fig. 3) or it may have vertical flanges (14, Fig. 2) projecting therefrom into the chambers 2 and 3. To maintain fluidization the flow of gas through the beds may be supplemented by an auxiliary flow of gas or by a recirculation of the gas which has passed through the bed. The bed particles may comprise a hydrophobic plastics material when, for example, the apparatus is used to exchange heat between two air streams respectively entering and being exhausted from a dwelling. |
