1,161,554. PVC coating compositions. STANDARD BRANDS CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Inc. 13 July, 1966 [1 Feb., 1966], No. 31450/66. Heading B2K [Also in Division C3) A heat-curable coating composition comprises (a) a plasticised polyvinyl chloride resin (b) a heat - activatable mixture of 2-20% of an aldehyde - condensihie compound and 1-10% of a methylene donor and (c) 2-10% of an adsorbent solid, which disperses volatile heat-generated components, of particle size which will pass through a 200 mesh sieve, all percentages being based on the total weight of the composition. Component (a) is preferably a vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer plasticised with phthalate esters, phosphates, phosphonates, polyalkylene glycol condensates, aromatic petroleum oil or chlorinated paraffin. Component (b) is a phenol-formaldehyde novolak or phenol precursor thereof together .with a condensing agent, e.g. hexamethylene tetrarnine, paraformaldehyde, sym-trioxane, anhydroformaldehydeaniline, ethylene diamine, formaldehyde and methylol derivatives of urea and melamine. Component (c) can be activated carbon, silica gel, activated alumina, fullers earth, diatomaceous earth, microtraps, sodium aluminosilicate, natural and synthetic zeolites (molecular sieves), starch, modified starches, ligaocellulose or cellulose. There may may also be present a hydrocarbon, ketone or glycol-ether solvent, pigments e.g. carbon black, titanium dioxide, chrome yellow, chrome green, molybdium orange or phthalocyanine blue or green, fillers e.g. calcium carbonate, calcium oxide or silica, and stabilisers e.g. calcium, cadmium or lead soaps, barium or lead oxide, lead silicate or hydrous tribasic lead sulphate. After application the coatings are hardened by heating to 275-400 ‹F. In the examples the compositions are applied to steel plates.
|
