In a method of producing a pressed article such as chip boards, plywood and the like, the material to be pressed is located between press faces in a chamber, and while the material is in the chamber the chemical composition and/or the physical parameters of the atmosphere within the chamber which acts on the margin zones of the material is controlled during the pressing operation. A press comprising a cross- head 2 and a table 5 between which slabs 7 of material are compressed, with the interpositon of press plates 10, includes bellows 1 enclosing the slabs and enabling the atmosphere therewithin to be controlled i.e. by the introduction of gases or vapours via ducts 9. Heating and cooling elements may be provided in the plates 10. The lower end of the bellows is detachably attached to the table 5 by clamping levers 8. In modified arrangements bellows may be provided between and adjacent a pair of press plates, or the press is located in a rigid walled housing having a door, or each layer of material to be pressed is enveloped in a gas-tight wrapping. |
