An environmental control system (ECS) pack (100) is provided including a primary heat exchanger (102), a secondary heat exchanger (116) and an air cycle machine comprising a compressor (106) and a turbine (110). The compressor (106) is fluidly coupled to an outlet (144) of the primary heat exchanger (102) and to an inlet (142) of the secondary heat exchanger (116). The outlet (144) of the secondary heat exchanger (116) is fluidly coupled to the turbine (110). A first conduit (150) connects the outlet (144) of the primary heat exchanger (102) and the inlet (142) of the secondary heat exchanger (116). The first conduit (150) includes a first valve (152). A second conduit (154) connects the outlet (144) of the secondary heat exchanger (116) to an air load (128). The second conduit (154) includes a second valve (156).
