An external medium communication system comprising an external medium and a communication device for communicating with the external medium, the external medium including a conducting unit constituted by a first coil, a second coil, and a wiring unit connecting one end of the first coil to one end of the second coil and connecting another end of the first coil to another end of the second coil, the communication device including: an external medium detection antenna unit constituted by a coiled first antenna and a coiled second antenna;a current supply unit configured to supply current to the first antenna; andan external medium detection unit configured to detect that the first antenna and the second antenna are coupled by electromagnetic induction across the conducting unit by detecting a first induced electromotive force produced in the second antenna, the wiring unit and the external medium detection antenna unit being positioned so that when the external medium is mounted in a predetermined position, the first antenna and the first coil face each other, and the second antenna and the second coil face each other, the external medium further including a permanent magnet positioned so as to pass by a location adjacent to the second antenna while the external medium is being inserted into and removed from the communication device, and the external medium detection unit further configured to detect a second induced electromotive force produced in the second antenna due to the permanent magnet passing by the location adjacent to the second antenna.
