N-substituted derivatives of p-(a -amino-b ,b ,b - trihalogenoethyl) benzaldehyde of the formula- where R is a straight or branched-chain alkyl containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an arylalkyl, alicyclic, allyl or 2-tetrahydropyranyl-methyl radical and the X symbols, which may have the same or different meanings, represent chlorine or bromine atoms, are made by reacting an N - substituted - p - xylylideneimine of the formula- where R1 is the same as R or an aromatic radical, with trichloroacetic acid, tribromoacetic acid, chlorodibromoacetic or dibromochloroacetic acid in an organic solvent and hydrolysing the reaction product. R is preferably a C3- 6 alkyl, allyl, benzyl, a -phenylethyl, b -phenylethyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl or a 2-tetrahydropyranylmethyl radical. The products have antitumour, antifungal and antiviral properties.
