<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing pyruvic acid or its ester from lactic acid or its ester under a mild condition by using an inexpensive catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided the method for producing pyruvic acid or its ester from lactic acid or its ester by reacting lactic acid or its ester in a liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst containing at least vanadium element and an oxidizing agent.
