[Also in Divisions B8 and G4] A method of embedding a chip 41 within a record card 18 comprises forming a pouch 37 in one edge of the card by means of splitting knife 31 and inserting a chip within the pouch. A machine 10 for carrying out the method comprises six stations, i.e. a card feeding station 20, a splitting station 30, a chip insertion station 40, a heat sealing station 50, an abrading station 60, and a card eject station 70. The machine includes a turntable 14 having pockets 16 which each retain a card therein by means of suction via passages (26, 27); the table is indexed around between each station by means of a stepping motor. The card feeding station includes a hopper 21 holding a stack 28 of cards, the lowermost card being fed into a pocket 16 by means of feed finger 22. At the splitting station a pair of pneumatically-actuated knives 31 are moved inwardly to form pouches in opposite edges of the card; the knives are provided with shoulders 32 which prevent tearing of the card. The chip insertion station includes hoppers 46, Fig. 4, for stacks 44 of adhesivecoated chips 41, the latter being pushed into the pouches by blades 42. The heat sealing station includes a heat block 52 mounted on a slide 55 which is actuated by a pneumatic cylinder 57; a heater 53 is located in the block. The turntable is allowed to rotate past the abrading station so that excess material in the card is removed by a pair of rotating abrading wheels 61 (Figs. 6A and 8E); the height of the abrading wheels is controlled by a vernier 64. At the card eject station an ejector finger 71 (Fig. 7, not shown) is operated by means of a pneumatic cylinder so as to pull the card from the pocket 16 on to a delivery stack (73, 74). |
