The fuel elements consist of bodies of plastic moderator material with coated granule type fuel either embedded in the plastic, used as a loose fill for cavities in it or on a bonded form to fill similar cavities. Channels are provided for coolant flow and this ensures a uniform temp. distribution. The distribution of the fissionable material may be uniform or in zones of different density. The use of coated grains prevents damage to the moderator material.
