A soft output detector is programmed with a first set of parameters. Soft information is generated according to the first set of parameters, including likelihood information that spans a maximum likelihood range. Error correction decoding is performed on the soft information generated according to the first set of parameters. In the event decoding is unsuccessful, the soft output detector is programmed with a second set of parameters, soft information according is generated to the second set of parameters (including likelihood information that is scaled down from the maximum likelihood range), and error correction decoding is performed on the soft information generated according to the second set of parameters.

a detector controller which is configured to program a soft output detector with a first set of one or more parameters; the soft output detector which is configured to generate soft information according to the first set of parameters, including likelihood information that spans a maximum likelihood range; and an error correction decoder configured to perform error correction decoding on the soft information generated according to the first set of parameters, wherein in the event decoding is to unsuccessful:
the detector controller is further configured to program the soft output detector with a second set of one or more parameters;the soft output detector is further configured to generate soft information according to the second set of parameters, including likelihood information that is scaled down from the maximum likelihood range; andthe error correction decoder is further configured to perform error correction decoding on the soft information generated according to the second set of parameters.
