The purpose of the present invention is to provide: a secondary battery having excellent electrical characteristics, high reliability, and high qualities by eliminating a short-circuit between a positive electrode and a negative electrode by means of an insulating member, and suppressing a volume increase and deformation of a battery element; and a method for manufacturing the secondary battery. A secondary battery (100) of the present invention includes a battery element wherein positive electrodes (1) and negative electrodes (6) are alternately laminated with a separator (20) therebetween. Each of the positive electrodes (1) and each of the negative electrodes (2) respectively include current collectors (3, 8), and active materials (2, 7) applied to the current collectors (3, 8). An active material (2A) positioned on one surface of the current collector (3) of each of the positive electrodes (1) includes a flat portion (2A1), and a portion (thin layer portion) (2A3), which is positioned further toward the end portion side than the flat portion (2A1), and which has less thickness than the flat portion (2A1). A portion of an active material (2B) positioned on the other surface of the current collector (3) of each of the positive electrodes (1), said portion facing the thin layer portion (2A3) of the active material (2A) positioned on the one surface by having the current collector (3) therebetween, is a flat portion having a constant thickness. |
