The purpose of the present invention is to provide a catalyst which enables reduction of the amount of a solid electrolyte to be mixed and is capable of improving the initial performance of a fuel cell. In addition, the present invention provides a method for producing the catalyst. The present invention relates to a catalyst for solid polymer fuel cells, which has a sulfo group (-SO3H) on each catalyst particle, and wherein the sulfur peak intensity (IS) to the platinum peak intensity (IPt), namely IS/IPt on each catalyst particle is from 0.0044 to 0.0090 (inclusive) in a TEM-EDX analysis. This catalyst enables reduction of the amount of a solid electrolyte to be added and enables a fuel cell to have a good initial performance, thereby contributing to the practical use of fuel cells. |
