[Class 38 (i)] The members of a plug and socket coupling are locked together by a clamping' bar having a head which, when the plug member is released after insertion, engages a hole in the socket member, in the manner described in Specification 553,623, [Group XXII]. In one form, a contact pin 9a lying alongside the clamping bar 8 protrudes through a metal plug 7 in a hollow body 6 and is attached to the lower end of a spring 9 within the body. The bar 8 is attached to a metal cap 5 or to a plunger 5a, Fig. 2, secured in the metal cap 5 and resting upon the spring 9 and to the cap a lead 4 is connected. When the cap 5 with its insulating housing 1 is pressed down, the bar 8 protrudes further so that its head 8a is clear of the pin 9a and can be passed first through a hole 11b in the disc contact 11a of the socket 10. The pin 9a and the shank part of the bar 8 follow into the hole 11b and substantially fill it, so that when the plug is released and the bar 8 is drawn back by the spring, the head 8a is pressed against the underside of the disc 11a and prevents withdrawal of the contact. A bayonet catch 1a 6a may be provided to hold the parts in position during insertion of the plug. Where additional connections are required, washers 12 attached to leads are inserted between the plug 7 and the disc 11a. In a modification, the disc may have upstanding resilient claws to grip the protruding end of the plug 7. Where two contacts similar to that above described are mounted on the plug body, a single depressible cap carries the two plungers 5a. Where the fastening device .does not constitute a contact, or only an earthing contact, it is arranged between-a pair of flat contacts that abut resiliently against studs in the co-operating member. Instead of depressing a cap to compress the spring, the plunger 5a may be actuated by a press-button. |
