PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for manufacturing ethylenedialkylphosphinic acid, ethylenedialkylphosphinic acid esters, and ethylenedialkylphosphinates usable economically on a large scale.SOLUTION: (a) A phosphinic acid source (I) is converted into an alkylphosphonous acid or a salt or ester thereof (II) by an olefin (IV) in the presence of a catalyst A constituted by a transition metal and/or transition metal compound and at least one ligand; (b) the generated alkylphosphonous acid or salt or ester thereof (II) is converted into an ethylenedialkylphosphinic acid derivative (III) by an acetylenic compound (V) in the presence of a catalyst B consisting of a peroxide-forming compound and/or peroxo compound and/or azo compound.
