The present invention relates to isolated polypeptides having xylanase activity and isolated polynucleotides encoding the polypeptides. The invention also relates to nucleic acid constructs, vectors, and host cells comprising the polynucleotides as well as methods of producing and using the polypeptides.

An isolated variant of a parent GH8 xylanase polypeptide, wherein said variant comprises a conserved GH8 xylanase motif [ST]E[GAS]X[GAS][YFW] (SEQ ID NO: 1); the variant comprises an amino acid sequence having at least 90% sequence identity to amino acids 1-406 of the GH8 xylanase of SEQ ID NO: 3; the variant comprises at least one amino acid alteration which is a substitution, deletion, and/or insertion of one or more amino acids at one or more position(s) corresponding to position(s) 53, 55, 56, 58, 59, 60, 61, and/or 62 of SEQ ID NO: 3, and the variant has xylanase activity.
