In order to form an alloyed surface layer of a metal substrate (10), the metal surface to be treated has applied thereto a layer consisting of one or more alloy components in powdered form. Then the surface is swept by a continuously excited laser beam (18) which causes the layer, together with a defined depth range of the metal substrate, to melt. As a result of the temperature gradient and a pressure wave caused by the high energy input, the melt is mixed. The treated zone then solidifies, and an alloy layer of a predefinable depth is produced which over its whole depth has essentially the same composition and the same properties. Thus it is possible to prevent the formation of an undesirable two-layered surface structure during surface-alloying.

|
