PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a start control device of an internal combustion engine which avoids in advance that cranking utilizing combustion pressure is failed, and can prevent that an adverse influence is imparted to the operability, and a start control method.SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine start control device for controlling a start of an internal combustion engine has an expansion stroke combustion start mode at which fuel is supplied to an expansion stroke cylinder, the internal combustion engine is cranked by combustion pressure which is generated by igniting the fuel, the cranking is assisted by an electric motor which is connected to the internal combustion engine via a clutch, and the internal combustion engine is started. The internal combustion engine start control device includes: an ignition performance determination part 100 which determines whether or not the expansion stroke cylinder is favorable in ignition performance; and a transmission torque capacity adjustment part which makes the clutch possess a transmission torque capacity for the expansion stroke combustion start mode when the expansion stroke cylinder is favorable in the ignition performance, and when not favorable in the ignition performance, makes the clutch possess a transmission torque capacity for a normal start. |
