In a process for the manufacture of shaped articles, such as films, filaments and fibers, of regenerated cellulose by the viscose process, heavy metal ions (which catalyse alkaline- oxidative degradation of the cellulose) are removed from the alkali cellulose prior to aging. This may be achieved by adding, suitably in stoichiometric excess, a heavy metal-complexing agent, for example EDTA or a salt thereof or a polyphosphate, to the alkali cellulose prior to aging, especially to the steeping liquor or to the cellulose pulp prior to steeping. |
