A switching controller for coupling one of a plurality of voltage sources such as battery 206 and fuel cell stack 204, to a load 214 sets a proportion of a switching period during which each voltage source is connected to the load based on a received characteristic of one of the voltage sources. The received characteristic can be a fuel cell voltage, or a fuel cell stack voltage current, temperature or pressure. The switching frequency can be less than 1 KHz or 100 Hz. Current drawn from a fuel cell source can be increased, when it generates a voltage that exceeds a threshold, and supplied to a charge a battery as the other source. Load 214 can receive power from the voltage sources using a DC-DC converter 212 and be connected to the sources using switches 208, 210, which can be field effect transistor switches. During the proportion of switching period assigned to a source the controller may connect only that source to the load. |
