The present invention relates to: a method for controlling a sawing machine having a sawing tool, which is driven by a drive device of an electrical sawing tool with a first frequency converter, and having a sawing feed device for moving the electrical sawing tool at a feed rate in relation to a workpiece to be sawn; and to such a sawing machine. The feed rate is changed from an idling feed rate to a working feed rate when the sawing tool comes in contact with the workpiece. A value of a physical variable is determined at the first frequency converter, wherein the value of the physical variable corresponds to torque transferred from the drive device of the sawing tool to the sawing tool or from which a change in the torque can be achieved. The changeover from the idling feed rate to the working feed rate takes place in dependence on the value of the physical variable.
