PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a highly-reliable emergency stop device that can make surface-to-surface contact between a friction material and a guide rail uniform, generate a braking force stably not only in an ordinary elevator but also in a high-speed, large-capacity elevator, and suppress excessive deceleration just before stopping thereby eliminating burden from passengers, as well as an elevator using the emergency stop device.SOLUTION: In an emergency stop device 6 for an elevator and an elevator using the same, a braking force is generated by pressing and sliding a braking piece 1 along a guide rail 7 installed in a hoistway thereby to stop a car 43. The emergency stop device 6 includes: an elastic member 10 that provides the braking piece 1 with a pressing force against the guide rail 7; a friction member 3 arranged on the braking piece 1, facing the guide rail 7; a support body 2 that supports the friction member 3; and a cushion member 5 arranged between the friction member 3 and the support body 2. The cushion member 5 has an inflection point at a specified temperature in the relationship between a temperature and a deformation amount upon receiving force. |
