<p>A dipstick assembly (1) comprises: (i) a dipstick unit (10) comprised of a cap (13) and a dipstick fixed to the cap (13), the cap (13) incorporating a cylindrical skirt (17), and (ii) a tubular mounting arrangement (100) on which the cap (13) of the dipstick unit (10) may be releasably locked by means of a bayonet coupling with the dipstick locating through the mounting arrangement (100). The tubular mounting arrangement (100) has a cylindrical peripheral end region (101) over and around which the cap (10) is adapted to locate. The bayonet coupling is formed externally of the tubular mounting arrangement (100) by cooperating pin (14) and groove (102) formations. At least one pin formation (14) of the bayonet coupling is located on the interior of the skirt (13) and at least one groove formation (102) of the bayonet coupling is located on the exterior of the cylindrical peripheral end region (101) of the mounting arrangement (100). The or each groove formation (102) comprises a leg section (105) extending parallel to the axis of cap (10) and a foot section (106) extending around the exterior surface of the cylindrical peripheral end region (101) of the mounting arrangement (100).
