A surface cleaning apparatus comprises a water storage container 12, a steam generator 13 including a heating element(s), and a fluid passage for directing steam from the steam generator 13 to a cleaning head 50 of the apparatus, wherein the apparatus includes a device 20 for blocking the fluid passage which is moveable between blocking and unblocking positions and wherein the device 20 moves to the unblocking position when the pressure within the fluid passage exceeds a predetermined magnitude. Preferably, the device 20 moves to the blocking position when the pressure within the fluid passage falls below a predetermined magnitude and the device 20 can be biased to its blocking position. The biasing may be effected by a spring or other resiliently deformable member. The device 20 is preferably a valve. |
