PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of shortening a time between start of reading of information essential to a pre-process and end of the pre-process.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus 1 forms an image on a sheet by using consumable materials contained in a consumable material unit 11. The consumable material unit 11 includes a storage medium 13 for storing first and second information. The image forming apparatus 1 includes a control part 3 and a reading part 9. The control part 3 executes a pre-process that is a process for starting forming of an image on the basis of the first information. Before reading the second information, the reading part 9 reads the first information from the storage medium 13 and transmits the information to the control part 3. The first information is essential to the pre-process. The second information can be processed by the control part 3 while or after the image is formed.
