Determining an optimal schedule for transmitting network operator data from a source node to a destination node in a telecommunications network involves taking account of network utilisation by network customer traffic. The source node is connected to a plurality of egress links. A schedule generator generates a plurality of candidate schedules for each egress link of the source node by: selecting a first window of time, determining a highest throughput route starting at the egress link during the first window of time based on predicted link utilisations by customer traffic, and if the throughput of the highest throughput route is not sufficient to transport all the data during the first window of time, determining how much data can be sent in the first time window and then repeating the procedure for subsequent time windows until all the data can be sent. This procedure is repeated for each candidate schedule and the best schedule is selected for the transmission. |
