Monitoring opening of the door of an optical fibre cable cabinet

The opening of the door (D) of a cable-cabinet (10/20) for optical fibers can be monitored by providing in the cabinet an optical network terminal (14/24) connected, via an optical splitter (12/22), to an optical fiber (5,5') that connects to an optical line terminal (2) and by controlling the supply of signals from this optical network terminal (14/24) to the optical line terminal (2) based on the open or closed state of the cabinet door (D). In one configuration the optical network terminal (14/24) becomes powered-up only when the cabinet door (D) is opened, leading the connected optical line terminal (2) to issue a "new terminal" notification of a configuration status update. In another configuration, a powered optical network terminal (14/24) becomes switched off when the cabinet door (D) is opened, causing the connected optical line terminal (2) to issue a notification indicating cessation of transmissions from this network terminal (14/24). In both cases a monitoring module (30) receiving the notifications from the optical line terminal (2) can determine, based on the notifications, that the cable-cabinet door has opened.
