The submucosa tissue source is purified by disinfection and removal steps to deactivate and remove contaminants, thereby making the purified structure biocompatible and suitable for grafting on and/or in a patient.

A surgical method for treating a patient, comprising: implanting a multilayer construct in the patient, the multilayer construct including a plurality of layers of tissue matrix material obtained from mammalian urinary tract tissue, wherein each of the layers of tissue matrix material includes submucosa tissue and lamina propria tissue and retains one or more native growth factors in the tissue matrix material, wherein said tissue matrix material is provided in a sterile condition while retaining said one or more native growth factors, and wherein said one or more native growth factors includes Fibroblast Growth Factor-2; and wherein the tissue matrix material additionally retains at least one native bioactive agent selected from the group consisting of a proteoglycan, a glycoprotein, and a glycosaminoglycan.
