Protein-containing adhesives, and manufacture and use thereof

The invention provides protein adhesives and methods of making and using such adhesives. The protein adhesives contain ground plant meal or an isolated polypeptide composition obtained from plant biomass.

1. An adhesive composition comprising:
(a) from about 1% to about 90% (w/w) of a reactive prepolymer selected from the group consisting of a polyisocyanate-based prepolymer, an epoxy-based prepolymer, and a combination thereof; (b) water; and (c) ground plant meal in an amount sufficient to disperse the reactive prepolymer in the aqueous medium, wherein the ground plant meal is derived from corn, wheat, sunflower, rapeseed, canola, castor, camelina, jatropha, mallow, peanuts, sugarcane begasse, tobacco, whey, or a combination thereof; the ground plant meal being present in an amount ranging from about 1% (w/w) to about 50% (w/w) of the adhesive composition.
