A self-priming pump assembly, for pumping liquid and gas, comprises an inlet submerged in a liquid in use, and an impeller 4 for pumping into an upward rising discharge line. In a first aspect the pump assembly is in a casing 110 to establish a liquid volume 36 in which the inlet is submerged. The pump assembly has an auxiliary pump element defined by a part-conical mixing cone 7 which, on rotation, pulls water up internally within the cone, and out radially above a lower portion of the impeller. A lower edge of the cone extends below a lower edge of the impeller. The discharge line defines a section for providing a gas/liquid separation where gas rises further upwards into the discharge line, while the liquid flows back into the casing. In a second aspect the pump assembly is able to pump gas by drawing liquid through an inlet pipe to a pump casing and into a discharge line. |
