Luminous slabs, blocks, posts, bricks, &c., are made by shaping concrete, cement, plaster, clay &c., and, while the mass is still wet, applying a luminous composition to the surface. The mass is then allowed to harden. The articles may be used for kerbstones, traffic direction lines and indicators, steps, &c. The luminous composition may comprise an alkaline earth sulphide, zinc sulphide and mesothorium, or zinc sulphide and a radio active constituent such as a radium salt, e.g. a compound of radium and actinium, and may be applied as a wash with or without cement. A thin wash of cement may be applied over the luminous layer.
