Disclosed is a method for flow monitoring, comprising: making a decision of description information about service data contained in an application detection control (ADC) rule according to decision information about the description information about the service data; and delivering the ADC rule to a flow monitoring device, wherein the ADC rule contains a service type of the service data, the description information about the service data and a flow monitoring keyword, so that the flow monitoring device performs flow monitoring on service data which conform to the service type and the description information about the service data according to the flow monitoring keyword. The method provided by the embodiments of the present invention can further distinguish the same kind of service according to description information about service data and a flow monitoring keyword, which can thus improve the accuracy of flow monitoring for a user.
