Independent claims are also included for: (1) preparing a polyurethane, comprising mixing isocyanates with polyols, a polycarbonate, optionally a blowing agent, a catalyst and other auxiliary agents and additives, and allowing to react to form a polyurethane; and (2) the polyurethane. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# The polycarbonate is useful: as a flame retardant; and for producing a plastic (claimed). #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# The polycarbonate provides an improved flame retardant property to the polyurethane foam material without deteriorating its mechanical property and without any emissions. #CMT#POLYMERS : #/CMT# Preferred Components: The polycarbonate comprises at least 3 wt.% of phosphorous and optionally hydroxy-group. The polycarbonate has a hydroxy-number of 2-800 mg of potassium hydroxide/g. The polycarbonate comprises propylene oxide- and/or ethylene oxide-units. The polycarbonate is a hyper-branched polycarbonate. The polyurethane is a polyurethane foam material. At least one trifunctional alcohol and optionally difunctional alcohols are used for the preparation of the plycarbonate, where the amount of the difunctional alcohol based on the total weight of at least one trifunctional alcohol and the difunctional alcohol is 0-39.9 wt.%. The polycarbonate has no aromatic components in the carbonate backbone. #CMT#DEFINITIONS : #/CMT# Preferred Definitions: R1, R2 : methoxy phenyl, tolyl, furyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl, phenoxy, ethoxy or methoxy. #CMT#EXAMPLE : #/CMT# Trimethylolpropane with 1,2 propylene oxide (2400 g), diethyl carbonate (1417.5 g) and potassium carbonate (0.6 g) were provided into a three-necked flask. The mixture was heated to 120-140[deg] C and stirred for 2 hours. Then ethanol was distilled off and the temperature was slowly raised to 160[deg] C to obtain the polycarbonate. The obtained highly branched polycarbonate (403.5 g) was dissolved in toluene (400 ml) and was provided into a four-necked flask under argon atmosphere. Then triethylamine (379.5 g) was added. The mixture was heated to 90[deg] C and diphenyl phosphinic acid chloride (710.5 g) was added dropwise over 120 minutes. The mixture was stirred at 80[deg] C for 12 hours. The reaction mixture was worked up to obtain the polycarbonate after cooling to room temperature.
